Project Summary

The place of death for most older Canadians has changed over time, but most older adults still die in hospital. The factors that are associated with the place of death have not been fully studied in a population reflective of the Canadian population. We will look at where Canadians die, and the factors associated with the location of death. We will use a questionnaire sent to a friend or family of the participants who died. We will determine if different diseases and social factors are associated with the place of death. We will also look at whether people died where they wanted to die, and the factors that are associated with dying in the place that they had wanted. The results of this study will help guide geriatric, home care and palliative care services.
