Examining the effect of social support on binge drinking with a modified Poisson regression model

Binge drinking is a major public health concern that can have serious consequences, especially for older adults. Previous research has shown that older adults are at a higher risk for binge drinking, particularly those who are socially isolated or have mental health issues. However, there is a lack of evidence on the role of social networks in binge drinking behavior in this population. This proposed study aims to fill this gap by examining the relationship between social network characteristics and binge drinking in older adults using data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA). The results of this research will provide a better understanding of the relationship between social networks and binge drinking in older adults and help inform the development of targeted interventions to reduce binge drinking and its associated harms in this population.
