Presentation 1: “Overcoming Communication Predicaments in Aging” by Ellen Ryan
Summary: The “Communication Predicament of Aging” model highlights how negative stereotypes lead to patronizing communication toward older adults who then find it difficult to exhibit competence or pursue their goals for health. Health professionals can minimize this social construction of excess disability and empower older patients by listening deeply and supporting assertiveness. How to promote the health and well-being of older adults through empowering communication? For more information on Ellen Ryan, please visit: writingdownouryears.ca

Presentation 2: “How Ageist Are you?" by Erika Arseneau
Summary: How does the public perceive older adults and how can we develop tools to measure this perception in the population? Erika Arseneau will present her project on the design and validation of a tool to measure ageism, in order to make the public's definition of elderly/old/senior more understandable.
