Webinar series showcases CLSA research this fall

The Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA)’s webinar series covering a broad range of topics related to the study of aging will resume this fall with a focus on research using CLSA data.

The first webinar of the 2016-17 series, titled ‘Measuring Frailty in Older Canadians: An Analysis of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging,’ will be presented at 1:30 p.m. (ET) on Thursday, September 29.

David M. Kanters, a Master of Science candidate at McMaster University, will talk about a new frailty measurement tool that was created and used to evaluate the frailty of participants in the CLSA. Kanters is supervised by Dr. Lauren Griffith, an associate professor in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster and a CLSA associate scientific director.

The 2016-17 CLSA webinar series runs monthly from September to June. Fall presentations include:

Speaker: Dr. Katerina Maximova of the University of Alberta will present “Preventing chronic disease through lifestyle modification: longitudinal approaches.”

Date: Nov. 22, 2016
Time: Noon ET
Speakers: Dr. Verena Menec of the University of Manitoba and Dr. Nancy Newall of Brandon University will present “Definitions of social isolation: A pilot study using CLSA.

Date: Dec. 6, 2016
Time: 1 p.m. ET
Speaker: Ann M. Toohey, a PhD Candidate at the University of Calgary, will present "Aging-in-place with pets: Is pet-ownership relevant to social participation and life satisfaction for older adults in Canada?" The webinar focuses on her thesis research, which includes an analysis of CLSA data as part of a case study exploring the role of community services in enhancing benefits and addressing challenges of pet ownership for seniors. 

Starting this fall, CLSA webinars will be broadcast using WebEx. Attendees will have the option to join by phone or connect via their computers or mobile devices. Instructions on how to use this new application will be sent to attendees by email.
