Impact of depression and its treatment on subjective and cognitive trajectories of adults

Depression is a leading cause of disability in developed countries and the cognitive dysfunction associated with depression is a major contributor to this disability. Cognitive dysfunction can be measured subjectively using self-reported questionnaires, or objectively using neuropsychological tests with validated outcome measures. Prior cross-sectional studies have found a mismatch between subjective and objective cognitive function among people with depression. This relationship warrants further investigation to clarify varying results, and understand the role of antidepressants. This project aims to examine the relationship between depression and cognitive functioning using data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging. Our findings will further our understanding of cognitive dysfunction in people with depression and provide a foundation for future research that investigates novel interventions to mitigate cognitive dysfunction associated with depression.
