Project Summary

As the population ages, the demand for housing for seniors, including retirement homes, assisted living facilities, and old age facilities, is expected to rise in Canada. Seniors’ housing varies by jurisdiction but is generally paid for privately. The decision to transition to seniors’ housing, formal home-care services, and long-term care is often motivated by health and functional requirements, but income may also play a crucial role. Research investigating the association between income and housing transitions among older adults in Canada is limited. Using this dataset, we aim to examine the complex relationship between income and transition to seniors’ housing, apartment or condominium, and long-term care while accounting for predisposing factors, enabling factors, and need components. Understanding these relationships is critical for understanding the current and future demand for housing options for older adults.
