Project Summary

Nearly one third of older adults in Canada are immigrants. For many older immigrant adults, social networks based on familial, cultural, and linguistic relationships provide the social, emotional, physical, and other practical supports necessary for aging well. Of particular interest is allophone immigrants whose language at home is neither of Canada’s official languages of English or French. This study aims to investigate the self-perceived health of allophone immigrant older adults aged 45-85 in Canada in the context of social networks and social support availability before and during the COVID-19 pandemic using CLSA data. Findings from this study will contribute to the understanding of how allophone immigrants experience healthy aging in Canada and how they benefit from their social, cultural, and familial connections and networks.
