Project Summary

The proposed research seeks to understand the patterns, motivations, and timing for moves among older adults. In addition to understanding the spatial patterns associated with moves, the proposed research will systematically identify the most important predictors of moves, while also providing a tool to predict whether an individual will/will not move, enabling planning for Canada’s aging population. Through this project, we will identify the health, lifestyle, and economic factors that predict moves among older adults using innovative methods (machine learning) and the Canadian Longitudinal Survey on Aging. Drawing on the CLSA, analysis will include descriptive and multivariate statistical methods and machine learning (ML) techniques to analyze patterns of migration among older adults. The research will provide an improved understanding of what enables people to age-in-place, the motivators of migration for those that do move, and location choice, all of which are critical for service
