Project Summary
A great deal of existing research has identified links between poor social connectivity, social isolation, and overall well-being among older people. Many risk factors for social isolation/poor social connection have also been identified (e.g. low income, language minority), but exist mostly at the level of the individual. While some research has begun to suggest connections between place-based factors, such as neighbourhood characteristics, and social connection among older people, more evidence is needed to identify the specific pathway(s) through which place and space may prevent and/or lead to social isolation for those living in Canadian cities. As such, this study will begin to draw links between aspects of cities and neighbourhoods (e.g. availability of transportation, neighbourhood design) and risk of social isolation for older people. This information will help to inform future policies and programs aimed at addressing social isolation in later life.
