Project Summary
Middle-aged and older adults are at increased risk of poor outcomes from influenza, pneumococcal disease, COVID-19, and shingles. Although these are vaccine-preventable diseases and effective vaccines are available and recommended based on age and/or presence of underlying conditions, uptake among adults remains suboptimal. Most analyses of vaccine uptake and determinants mostly focus on a few factors and are typically limited to one vaccine at a time rather than considering a set of recommended vaccines for a given eligibility group and a broad range of potential factors. We aim to better understand the extent and patterns of uptake of recommended vaccines that protect against influenza, pneumococcal disease, shingles, and COVID-19 among Canadian adults. Our overall goal is to characterize vaccine uptake in ways that can inform the design of targeted interventions to improve vaccination coverage levels, thus contributing to reducing morbidity and mortality and promoting healthy aging.
