Manitobans invited to help solve mystery of aging

Thursday, January 26, 2012

Manitoba residents are being invited to participate in the largest study of aging ever undertaken in Canada.

The Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) will follow at least 50,000 Canadians between the ages of 45 and 85 for 20 years. The national study will collect information on the changing biological, medical, psychological, social, lifestyle and economic aspects of people’s lives as they age.

“We are hoping to enrol 4,400 participants from Manitoba who will help us to better understand the causes of disease and disability and shed light on some of the mysteries of the aging process,” said Verena Menec, community health sciences and director of the Centre on Aging at the University of Manitoba, and lead site investigator for the CLSA in Manitoba. “With the number of seniors in Manitoba expected to increase rapidly over the next two decades, there is a great need to understand the factors that influence healthy aging.”
